Napster Update
A visit to Napster.com today reveals some info on the planned launch of the new pay service, starting Oct 29.
$.99 per track and $9.95 per album is the rate listed on the site, along with the slogan "The Cat is Almost Back! ...sign up before anyone else."
"The Cat" may be coming back, but is isn't the cat millions know and love. This Cat has the hand of the RIAA and the big record corps. so far up its ass, they are controlling it's mouth.
I actually had some hope that this pay service would finally get it right. That they would realize $.99 for a product that you don't get a physical copy of, and has restrictive licensing.
Though in a Press Release, released today, they say there will be a premium service for $9.95 per month, which offers unlimited listening and downloading, 40 commercial-free interactive radio stations and a collection of community features, including the ability to email tracks to friends and share play lists with other Napster users. I'll be anxious to hear all the details on that.

If you don't know what replaygain is, it is a volume normalizing program that does not change the actual MP3 file itself. It's very nice!

The article is called "Will Napster 2.0 Save Music?" Whose music is what I want to know? The record company's music is my guess.
I havn't seen a music service yet, that truely works for the consumer.
With the low overhead, and no physical product, the current rates of $1-.79 a song is no deal.
